In Sint Maarten/Saint Martin the Caribbean shows itself from an unexpected side. On the half French, half Dutch island the border has already been open for 350 years. At first sight it is far away from the typical images of fine white beaches and secluded bays though. Not least because with its free port status it is a shopping paradise, one of the most popular cruise destinations and now the new centre of the charter yacht industry as well. Between mass tourism, Americanization and traffic jams, is there still room for historic heritage and unspoilt nature?

75,000 inhabitants from all over the world form a multinational population of locals, immigrants as well as tourists. That makes the Antillean island a mix of different races. But what does life look like in a place where so many contrasts meet?

What makes Sint Maarten so special, what is the "Island Fever" all about?
Writer and producer Christian Korte spent seven months on the not especially Caribbean, but special Caribbean island and examined these questions.

Ten individual portraits of different areas on this unusual island emerge from interviews with people on location.
